Useless

There are days that no matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to get myself organized enough to be of any real use. And today is one of them. Maybe it’s because today is Monday and the weekend was way too short or…I’m being an airhead blond or…I’d rather be outside playing in the rain or…whatever.

Unfortunately, from the time I get to work in the morning until I leave, I have no idea what the weather is like. I might as well be working in a dank cave. It’s like when I lived outside of Chicago in the winter. After a month of no sun, I’d start feeling really depressed. The sky could look like this and I’d never know it.

Come to think of it, maybe that’s why I can’t get anything done today. I am feeling a little down. No particular reason. That’s just the way life is sometimes.

Of course after a meeting this morning reviewing our work load for ’07, anyone would be depressed. They (the proverbial they) keep hiring new people for other disciplines, but do we get help? HELL NO!!!! I’m getting way too old for this kind of stress. I started training a very nice young man this afternoon in what we do so he can be of assistance to someone else in their job.

What’s wrong with this picture? And what did I do to piss off the powers that be? Never mind, I’m going to go pout for a while.

Home again,

Home again, lickity split. That's a line from the old movie "Bladerunner" when the guy comes home from work and his toys greet him at the door. I always liked it because sometimes it would be nice to come home without somebody saying gimmie first thing out of their mouth.

Dave and John, it was so kind of you to point out my spelling error. It's not that I can't spell. I can't help it if my fingers are blind. But talking about desserts, my choice would be Key Lime pie or cheese cake. But the best would be Cream Cheese Pie. No, that's not a mistake. My mother has a recipe off the Philadelphia wrapper from a million years ago that's to die for.

Speaking of Mom, here's how my morning with her went Thursday.
Mom: "Why are you here?"
Me: "Because Britt asked me to come see her, and with Robin passing away so suddenly, I decided that I wanted to see everybody while I could."
Mom: When are you going to take that weight off?"
Me: "What?" (Brilliant comeback, don't you think?"
Mom: "Are you and Joan going to put me in a home?"
Me: "What?" (Sparkling repartee.)
Mom: "Are you and Joan going to put me in a home?"
Me: "I hadn't planned on it. Do you want to go into a home?"
Mom: "*!!*!*1*!* I don't want to be stuck with all those old people." (She's 88)
Me: "So, why are we taking about it? As long as you can still get around on your own, and wipe your own butt there's no reason for you to go into a home."
Mom: "Oh."

That was the highlight of the day. We had lunch at the Atlantis Casino with my sister, and Mom pouted the entire time. We decided that we'd do dinner Friday evening since my niece couldn't make it that day. I ran by JSP where Britt and Joan work and managed to get online and sort through the junk e-mail.

But the best part was getting to spend a week with Brittany and spoil her a little. I think I mentioned that her husband is in California taking care of unfinished business. She's such a beautiful girl and I don't understand why she settled so low on the totem pole.

I was a good mom and didn't say a word about it while I was there, but my heart breaks for her. She'll never be out of debt again if she stays with this guy. (No, she doesn't read this.) I wanted so bad to wrap her in my arms and bring her home. Not to be,...yet.

Another Day in Dustland

Being off work for a week is wonderful, but I'm getting a little bored sitting around babysitting Britt's dogs. I've done a whole lot of reading and actually been able to work on my book some. I know she can't afford to take off from work, but it'd be nice.

The weather here has been beautiful. It doesn't start to get really hot until late afternoon. But it's so dry. Yeah, I know this is dessert. Very few people have lawns and it really makes things dusty. I'm just not cut out to live in the dessert. And maybe I'm just missing all my beautiful flowers.

Tomorrow is the supreme sacrifice. I'm going into Reno with Britt in the morning to see
Mom and my sister. It wouldn't be so bad except Joan can't stop talking about what a louse Britt's husband is. If she's not ragging about him, it's her daughter-in-law. Mom just complains about everything.

God, I pray I don't wind up a bitter, hateful, old woman like that.

Gone From Home

Last week my beautiful daughter called and asked if I would come see her. In addition, my sister's sister-in-law had died the week before of a sudden massive stroke. Anyway, all that's to say I'm spending the week with Britt in Carson City, NV. That's one of the reasons I haven't posted in a while.

I flew out of DFW Sunday night and wouldn't you know their random searches netted me. I didn't really care because I had allowed more than enough time knowing the security situation. If they wanted to inspect my smelly tennies, more power to them.

The flight from DFW to Denver and Denver to Reno were both uneventful. Neither flight was full and I was glad because I could stretch my legs a little. I just don't understand how really big and/or tall people deal with those airline seats. I'm only 5'7" and shrinking, but it's like sitting in a straight jacket.

Jimbob declared that he was going to eat at Ruby Tuesday every night while I'm gone. He's just not very handy in the kitchen. In fact I had to remind him to feed the cats in my absence. Coffee in the morning is about the extent of his culinary abiliy. At that I figure I'll get home and have a week's worth of coffee cups setting on the counter waiting for me. I'm not sure why, but he refuses to put dishes in the dishwasher. Maybe I need to send him to the Brawny Academy.

Britt's at work, but we're supposed to have dinner with her mother-in-law tonight. I still haven't met or even talked to her husband. He had some unfinished business over in California. But that's not all bad because I get my baby to myself week.

TTFN, I'll try to stop by to say hi to a few while I'm online.

Green Thumb

Do I have a green thumb…or what? Last year I planted two tomatoe plants and got one measly tomato that the birds got to before I did. So this year, I didn’t even bother. Now I have two plants that have voluntarily come up and so far we’ve gotten half-a-dozen tomatoes.

Now, can you believe this? I have not planted any cantaloupe seeds ever. But if you look at the picture, if this is not a cantaloupe, it's a really good imitation of one. There are actually two that are nearly ripe for the picking. I put this trellis up because I was going to plant hyacinth vines, but this is what I got instead.
