New Year's Tradition

Jimbob and I have a New Year's Tradition. For the past six years (our anniversary was last Sunday) he goes to the market and buys two (not just 0ne) can of blackeyed peas because it's supposed to bring good luck to eat them on New Years Day.

And every year I tell him that I'll fix them for him because I don't like blackeyed peas. Just as pridictable, he's absolutely shocked at my response.

Nan,

We ALWAYS have blackeyed peas (with ham) on New Years Day. Don't know if it brings prosperity or not, but unlike you I really like them. Of course, we don't buy them in a can, either. Carol cooks them up with ham and celery and onions, and we eat them with cornbread.

In your defense though, Carol's dad would never eat blackeyed peas saying they tasted to him like sawdust. Since I don't ever remember actually eating sawdust, I'm not qualified to comment.

John

P.S. Sorry about Jimbob's memory problem. That's another trait he and I share. Just ask Carol.

Black-eyed peas? I'm not even sure the grocers carry those here in Michigan. I think our New Year's tradition is to finish up whatever we didn't eat from our New Year's Eve party. Lots of snacks and stuff.

We have peas too. I think you'd like it the way my hubby fixes it, lots of ham and it's sweet.
